History The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team lost to the Brock Badgers by a score of 4-2 on Saturday (Jan. 10) night at Varsity Arena.

The Blues had a solid start, controlling play in the offensive zone. Even with their good beginning, the Badgers took the lead first when Rayna Franklin scored from a rebound. However, the Blues kept pushing hard and managed to outshoot the Badgers 9-8 after the first period.

<p In the second period, Brock increased their lead with a goal from Kaedyn Gomes. The Blues fought back as third-year forward Taylor Delahey skillfully maneuvered through defenders and sent a backhand shot past goaltender Megan Thiessen, narrowing the gap. Unfortunately for Toronto, Taylor Wolsey capitalized on another rebound to put Brock ahead by two goals again before heading into the final period.

As the third period began, Toronto wasted no time in making a comeback attempt. Third-year forward Abby Whitworth responded brilliantly with her league-leading 13th goal of the season. The Port Moody, B. C., native jumped on a loose puck in front of the net and fired it past Thiessen to reduce their deficit to just one goal. In goal, third-year goalie Carlee Vance made some crucial saves during this period to keep Toronto’s hopes alive while they searched for an equalizer. Despite their best efforts until the very end, they couldn’t get that third goal past Thiessen as Avery Diljee sealed Brock’s win with an empty net goal.

Vance finished with 22 saves for U of T.

The Blues will be back on ice Thursday (Jan. 15) morning when they take on Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in their school day matchup. Puck drop is set for 11 a. m., and fans can catch all the action live on oua. tv.
