Tillsonburg Town Council is thinking about getting rid of the two-hour parking limit downtown on Saturdays.

Councillor Chris Rosehart proposed a motion at a recent meeting asking town staff to prepare a report on possibly relaxing Saturday parking rules and what that might mean for local businesses.

“If you’re in town shopping, you’re parked in the downtown, you’re going to stop and have a bite to eat,” Rosehart said. “Your two hours are up before you know it, and next thing you know, you go back to your car and you’ve got a ticket.”

Rosehart mentioned that receiving tickets became an issue over the past six months when by-law officers started working weekends.

“(The two-hour limit has) always been there … but nobody ever got tickets before,” she added.

It would be better for everyone, Rosehart noted, to relax parking rules one day a week as we approach Christmas shopping and holiday party season.

Development Commissioner Cephas Panschow pointed out that a recent retail study of the downtown area showed that Saturdays are usually the busiest shopping days; however, finding parking tends to be easier since around 4,000 fewer people are in the core for their jobs during regular business hours.

Councillor Bob Parsons suggested that the Downtown Tillsonburg BIA should be consulted as part of the report.

“(The limit) assists the businesses by making sure patrons – potential customers – have a chance to come and go and shop,” Parsons added. “This is a long-standing tradition. I’m not against looking into this, but at the very least, this resolution will need to be referred to the BIA for comment if I’m going to support it.”

A report is expected to be completed and submitted in the coming weeks.
