The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA) is excited about a new set of labour laws in Ontario that will make it easier for professionals from other provinces to work in the province.

The newly introduced “As of Right” labour mobility rules, effective January 1, enable certified professionals from various industries in other provinces to start working in Ontario within ten business days and for up to six months while they wait for their full provincial registration.

NOMA has highlighted that northwestern Ontario faces significant challenges due to labour shortages, especially in smaller communities.

“Northern and Northwestern Ontario communities depend on a mobile, skilled workforce,” says NOMA president Rick Dumas. “Removing unnecessary barriers that prevent qualified workers from getting to work quickly helps employers fill urgent vacancies, supports regional economic growth, and strengthens community resilience across our region.”

The municipal association has also commended the provincial initiative aimed at reducing trade barriers between provinces through a new law that recognizes each province’s regulatory requirements. This could minimize or eliminate redundancy when moving goods and services across provincial borders.

A complete list of changes to Ontario’s laws and regulations effective as of the new year can be found on the provincial government website.
