Care Bus has been accessed greater than 2,000 occasions to date this winter

The bus runs from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. every day and people hours will prolong to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on days when the temperature falls beneath -25 C.

THUNDER BAY — Staff on the Care Bus have helped folks within the metropolis greater than 2,000 occasions this winter, with greater than two months of operations to go.

The Care Bus is operated by NorWest Neighborhood Well being Centres in partnership with the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre and the Ontario Native Ladies’s Affiliation and it averages about 70 encounters – or 70 distinctive people – a day.

NorWest Neighborhood Well being Centres’ director of psychological well being and substance use program, Brittany D’Angelo, stated a few of these folks will trip the bus and a few simply entry providers on the door.

The bus runs from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., most days.

Typically occasions folks have to depart in a single day shelters early within the morning after which could have nowhere to go till 1 p.m. when the Care Bus begins operations, stated D’Angelo.

When the temperature falls beneath -25 C the hours are prolonged to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“We wish to be sure that they’ve a heat, protected house from early on within the morning to 1 p.m. when our providers begin,” she stated. “We also want to make sure that we’re increasing accessibility to the other services that are offered on the Care Bus such as having a harm reduction support worker to talk to, doing referrals to other services and agencies within the city, and a lot of the things that our staff are helping the clients with on the bus.”

Employees will give out heat clothes to remain protected within the colder climate, however may even provide wound care, disaster intervention or getting folks to the emergency division, if wanted, or to meal applications on the Dew Drop Inn or Grace Place.

“(The Care Bus) is one of the most low-barrier services here in the community; it’s open to anyone,” stated D’Angelo. “It’s a safe space. It’s led by our staff that have lived or living experience with homelessness and addiction so they understand what the clients are going through and it might be different than accessing some of the other services in town where you don’t know if people are going to understand what it is that you’re going through on a daily basis.”

The Care Bus runs every day from December till March 31.
