Vianode, a Norwegian company that makes sustainable synthetic anode graphite, is set to open its first North American facility in Ontario. This project, which represents a $3.2 billion investment, will be based in the city of St. Thomas and will also be the first large-scale, low-emission synthetic graphite plant in North America.
Initially expected to hire around 300 people, the Vianode facility could potentially create up to 1,000 jobs once it reaches full capacity.
“Today marks an important step towards a resilient North American battery supply chain,” said Burkhard Straube, CEO of Vianode. “Ontario and the city of St. Thomas have been strong partners from day one, and Via TWO will bring industrial-scale, low-emission graphite to market through a phased build-out that supports customers, communities, and the clean energy transition.”

As the demand for graphite increases, this Vianode facility will help ensure that Ontario and Canada have a reliable domestic supply of this crucial material used in manufacturing, defense, and energy sectors. This move is an important step toward establishing a critical mineral supply chain within Ontario.
The Hon. Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, stated, “Today’s announcement is a historic milestone for southwestern Ontario and a major win for workers, creating good-paying manufacturing jobs today and for generations to come. We’re proud to welcome Vianode to St. Thomas as we strengthen our province’s competitive advantage in a critical industry and build the most competitive, resilient, self-reliant economy in the G7.”
Synthetic graphite is essential for producing lithium-ion batteries – specifically for making anodes – as well as being vital for semiconductors, grid-scale electrical storage systems, nuclear reactors, defense technologies, and steel production.
Using proprietary technology allows Vianode to create high-performance synthetic anode graphite with up to 90% lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional methods.
According to Vianode’s plans are already underway for ground preparation works with production expected to start by 2028. Future expansions could increase the plant’s capacity in Ontario to about 150,000 tons of synthetic graphite per year.

Invest Ontario has closely collaborated with Vianode since early on during its site selection process. To support this investment initiative in Ontario is currently negotiating terms for providing up to $670 million in loans.
