ST. THOMAS, ONTARIO – August 21, 2025- Power Co Canada today awarded two significant contracts for the St. Thomas gigafactory, securing agreements for both structural steel and foundations for the project’s first cell production building and critical works. Power Co will partner with Steelcon Group of Companies, a prominent Canadian-owned company, for the structural steel work. For essential foundation work, Power Co has contracted Magil Construction Canada Inc., another proudly Canadian-owned firm.

This important milestone prepares the site for groundbreaking in the coming weeks, marking a major advancement for Canada’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility.

Frank Blome, CEO of Power Co SE, said :

Today’s announcement marks another pivotal moment for the St. Thomas gigafactory that pushes the project into its next phase.

“The St. Thomas gigafactory is a cornerstone in our ambition to build a global cell company with strong roots in Europe and North America, safeguarding direct access to one of the key technologies of the 21st century. By leveraging innovative and skilled local expertise, St. Thomas will strengthen Canada’s position in the global EV battery manufacturing industry.”

Steelcon will deploy a dedicated team of over 500 skilled Canadian workers directly on this project, including more than 30 from nearby London and Southwestern Ontario region. This strategic collaboration shows Power Co’s commitment to using Canadian expertise, materials, and talent whenever possible to foster economic growth.

Danny Bianco, President at Steelcon Group of Companies said :

We are proud to partner with Power Co Canada on building the St. Thomas gigafactory-a project that represents the future of Canadian industry.

“Our team of skilled Canadian fabricators is ready to deliver results while contributing significantly to local employment opportunities and driving economic growth here in Ontario.”

The foundation work being done by Magil Construction Canada Inc is among the largest foundation packages so far in Southwestern Ontario. It includes constructing foundations for three buildings at the St. Thomas site totaling an area of 850,000 square feet. The first concrete pour is expected soon and will establish momentum towards rapidly building the gigafactory.

Paul Henke, President at Magil Construction Canada Inc said :

Magil Construction has a nearly 80-year history of building with vision; we’re excited to bring our expertise to such an important project in St. Thomas.

“Our commitment to collaborating with local tradespeople means this project will be built by locals for locals-setting up a foundation for economic prosperity and job creation across Southwestern Ontario.”

This announcement comes after Power Co launched its large recruitment campaign aimed at filling hundreds of positions at the gigafactory this year-further showing how quickly things are progressing with this project. Once fully operational, it’ll support thousands of direct and indirect jobs within the region.
