The individual accused of confronting a family with a baseball bat in a parking lot last week made a short court appearance in St. Thomas on Monday.
Mark Phillips, 36, appeared via video link from the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre in London, dressed in a jail-issued orange jumpsuit.
A publication ban was placed on all evidence presented during the hearing.
Phillips faces charges of aggravated assault and three counts of assault with a weapon after he allegedly attacked Sergio Estepa in a busy parking lot.
Estepa’s wife recorded the incident on her cellphone, capturing the license plate number of Phillip’s white BMW. Police stated that this helped them make an arrest in nearby London just hours later.
Estepa sustained a cracked rib and large bruise and mentioned they were shaken after what they described as an unprovoked attack.
St. Thomas police indicated they are treating the incident as potentially “racially motivated.”
“It’s disturbing. This was an isolated and quite disturbing incident. Hopefully it remains isolated,” said Sgt. Brian Carnegie.
Phillips will return to court again via video link on Friday.
