An officer from Elgin County is currently hospitalized with serious injuries after being hit by a driver who fled a traffic stop on Sunday morning.

According to Elgin County OPP, the officer noticed a suspicious vehicle traveling on Hwy. 3 between Centennial Avenue and First Avenue in St. Thomas around 10:45 a. m. The officer initiated a stop, but during their interaction, the driver took off, hitting the officer while fleeing.

The OPP managed to locate the vehicle soon after, and the suspect is now in custody as the investigation goes on. OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk shared a video update about the situation, thanking the “good Samaritans” who assisted the officer.

“We just wanted to simply say ‘Thank you’ for everything you did for that officer today,” he said.

The injured officer remains in hospital in serious, but non-life threatening condition.

The OPP Association also shared its concern for the injured officer and thanked first responders for their “calm and quick thinking” during the arrest of the suspect.

“Our thoughts today are with our OPP officer and their family who sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries after our officer was struck by a suspect vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on Highway 3 near St Thomas,” the association said in a social media post.

“This highlights the dangers our officers face every day keeping Ontario safe.”

Police are asking anyone with information or video footage related to the collision to contact them.
