ST. THOMAS, ONT.- Volkswagen’s Power Co Canada is celebrating a major step forward at its St. Thomas gigafactory project with the launch of construction on three key buildings.
With contracts given to two Ontario companies, concrete pouring has officially begun at the $7 billion electric vehicle manufacturing site, establishing the groundwork for the 350-acre industrial area.
Magil Construction Canada Inc. is heading up the foundational efforts for these buildings, which will involve over 500,000 square feet of formwork, more than 32,000 cubic metres of concrete, and around 4,850 metric tonnes of rebar. Steel erection by Canadian partner Steelcon is expected to start in the coming weeks, according to a release.
This massive EV battery plant is set to begin operations in 2027.
