ST. THOMAS, ONT.- Volkswagen’s PowerCo Canada is celebrating a “key” moment at its St. Thomas gigafactory project as construction kicks off on three major buildings.

With contracts given to two Ontario-based firms, concrete pouring has officially started at the $7 billion electric vehicle manufacturing site, setting the groundwork for the 350-acre industrial area.

Magil Construction Canada Inc. is in charge of the foundational work for the three structures, which includes over 500,000 square feet of formwork, more than 32,000 cubic metres of concrete, and around 4,850 metric tonnes of rebar. Steel erection by Canadian partner Steelcon is expected to begin in the coming weeks, according to a release.

This will be Canada’s largest EV battery plant and is set to start production in 2027.
