A German electric vehicle (EV) battery maker, Power Co, has started building a new manufacturing facility in St. Thomas, Ont.
This will mark the company’s third factory globally and the largest EV battery plant in Canada.
Power Co announced that Magil Construction Canada Inc., a Canadian construction firm, will handle the building of the southwestern Ontario facility.
The steel framework for the plant is set to begin by year-end, with Steelcon from Ontario supplying it.
Power Co states they are looking to hire thousands of workers and have already received over 100 applications since launching their recruitment campaign in August.

The company mentioned they are using “transit, billboard and social media ads aimed at attracting top-tier local talent for the thousands of jobs the plant will create.”
Premier Doug Ford praised this initiative.
“Power Co’s once-in-a-generation investment is proof we have everything we need right here to build the most competitive economy in the G7,” Ford says.
“With construction underway, we are already seeing the benefits with good-paying jobs for local workers, contracts for Ontario companies, and an even stronger position for our province in the global EV market.”
This development follows the closure of General Motors’ (GM) electric delivery van assembly facility in Ingersoll, Ont.
