David Yates Testifies in Murder Trial About Troubled Relationship

A man from London, Ont., who is on trial for second-degree murder took the stand in his own defence on Wednesday, detailing a rocky relationship with the 22-year-old woman he’s accused of killing.

David Yates, 53, appeared in a judge-alone trial in St. Thomas, where his lawyer has stated she will argue he acted in self-defence.

The prosecution claims that Yates killed Caitlin Jennings using a hammer on or around July 3, 2023. He made a confessional 911 call on July 5 that led police to a house in west London where they found Jennings dead on the living room floor.

Yates has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.

Bonding Over Electronic Music

Under questioning from defence lawyer Cassandra De Melo, Yates shared how he met Jennings back in 2022. At that time, he was living with another woman who operated an accounting business out of their home.

He had set up an electronic music studio in a backyard shed when Jennings stopped by to drop off some forms. The shed door was open; she saw the recording equipment and they started chatting about their shared interest in electronic music, according to Yates.

The two exchanged numbers and began meeting for coffee as Yates’s common-law relationship came to an end.

The first sign of trouble arose during a trip they took together to Toronto for an electronic music event. Yates recounted that Jennings wandered off to check on the DJ lineup but didn’t return for quite some time. Frustrated by waiting, he was taken aback when she finally returned and revealed that she had been drugged and raped in the parking lot at the venue.

“I felt responsible,” said Yates. “I shouldn’t have let her go.”

A complaint was made to Toronto Police; however, Yates testified he struggled to fully believe Jennings’s account since the details seemed inconsistent over time. For him, those lingering questions created ongoing issues within their relationship.

Nevertheless, they eventually moved into a rented home together on Francis Street in Strathroy.

Yates mentioned dropping her off at work at Tim Hortons while he held various union jobs doing concrete forming and other construction tasks. He also noted that Jennings sometimes helped him with side jobs involving concrete work and landscaping where he first recognized her impressive physical strength.

“Caitlin did all of the heavy lifting; it was impressive,” he said. “We worked well as a team. She made it really easy.”

Police Involvement at Home

Despite moments of harmony, their relationship faced challenges leading to police calls.

Yates recounted an incident at their Francis Street residence back in January 2023 when he called police after claiming she’d assaulted him. He showed officers shaky video footage from that day.

“I regretted showing him the video because that led to CJ getting charged,” he said. The court learned earlier that those charges resulted in a no-contact order barring Jennings from being near Yates.

Barely any time passed before Jennings reached out again apologizing and expressing her desire for them to live together once more. He met her outside Strathroy’s city limits since she indicated it was necessary to avoid enforcement of the no-contact order by local police.

The couple briefly stayed at a hotel before moving into a house rented by Yates on Kingsway Avenue located within London’s Oakridge Acres neighborhood towards late March 2023.

Yates noted there were times when things went well between them; he’d met Jennings’s mother and brother during this period too. He even encouraged her to reconnect with her father Dan after years apart, sharing how Dan traveled from Sault Ste Marie for dinner and stayed overnight at their house afterwards.

‘A Lot of Tension’ Between Them

Yet conflict persisted within their relationship largely due what Yates described as his discomfort regarding her story about what happened back in Toronto.
” It caused a lot of friction,” he said.
“I started second-guessing whether or not this was truthful.”

You often attacked me physically-kicking or punching-when I questioned her behavior,” he stated.
“One fight occurred after I discovered ‘disgusting’ messages on a phone I’d given to her after purchasing myself an i Phone.”
He mentioned some messages involved “online hookups.”

The court already heard about previous arrests relating to Jennings’s behavior yet despite returning home afterward conflicts continued between them.
Yates has yet been cross-examined by Crown attorneys concerning events leading up Jennifer’s death.”
