A driver has been charged following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a child in St. Catharines this summer.
The child was in the parking lot of the St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatic Centre on July 31 when he was hit and killed, according to Niagara Regional Police.
While police have not released the child’s name, community members have identified him as eight-year-old Thomas Kunst Locks. He and his twin brother were attending summer camp at the centre. An online petition has been started to push for better safety measures in the parking lot.
The driver involved stayed at the scene, police reported.
On Thursday, authorities announced they had charged a 74-year-old resident of St. Catharines with careless driving causing death.
The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to police at 905-688-4111, dial option 3, extension 1009504.
