The individual accused, 25-year-old Daniel Senecal – a registered sex offender – appeared for a virtual bail hearing on Wednesday, which was postponed to a later date.

Senecal is facing allegations related to the sexual assault of a young girl during a break-in at a residence in Welland.

Outside the courthouse, many people gathered, demanding changes to the criminal justice system.

“We’re going to ensure there is bail reform, and we’re going to ensure the perpetrator is labeled a dangerous offender,” said one speaker at the protest.

“I believe law enforcement, the police themselves are doing what they can, but I believe the justice system isn’t doing enough,” said one attendee.

The incident in Welland resonates deeply with some.

“Being a victim, I need to show support because there’s not only been many, but there’s going to be many if the laws don’t change,” said another participant.

Niagara’s police chief cautioned against misinformation circulating online and urged everyone to rely on verified sources.

The rally had an emotional atmosphere. Some individuals were sad and crying while others expressed anger and frustration. Everyone present wants changes made to the justice system.

“You know I’m a father of three children – it’s something I can’t fathom. It just goes beyond belief,” said Welland Mayor Frank Campion.

Campion mentioned that he is discussing with various levels of government about initiating change.

“The sentencing should be severe; it should be long and meaningful. You don’t get probation. There will be no probation for sexual predators,” said Campion.

Niagara police stated that the girl, who is under five years old, sustained serious injuries during the attack.
