‘Every dollar raised fuels programs and services for those affected by kidney disease,’ official says of annual fundraiser

NEWS RELEASE
THE KIDNEY FOUNDATION OF CANADA
*************************
This September, supporters will gather in communities across Ontario for the Kidney Walk.

Whether it’s to support loved ones facing kidney disease, celebrate a transplant, remember someone special, or connect with others on a similar path, it’s always inspiring to see the kidney community come together to support their own while raising funds for The Kidney Foundation’s mission.

“The Kidney Walks really are the highlight of the year. They provide a space where individuals living with kidney disease feel supported by family and friends – they also witness the strength of our community and realize that they aren’t alone in their journey,” said Mary-Pat Shaw, president of The Kidney Foundation’s Ontario branch.

In fact, over the past two years, the Kidney Walk has raised more than one million dollars each year.

“Every dollar raised fuels programs and services for those affected by kidney disease,” Shaw added.

More than four million Canadians are impacted by kidney disease. Various factors can influence an individual’s risk, from genetics to diabetes, high blood pressure, ethnic background, and more.

Currently, there is no cure for kidney failure. When kidneys fail, patients require dialysis several times a week or need a transplant to survive. Unfortunately, not everyone qualifies for a transplant; in Ontario, the average wait time for a deceased donor kidney is around four years.

This means that individuals dealing with kidney disease often encounter emotional, financial, and physical hurdles. Funds raised through the Kidney Walks enable the foundation to support leading research and offer essential programs.

“The Kidney Foundation supports Canadians at every step of their kidney disease journey,” says Shaw. “Whether it’s providing emotional support through our peer support program or offering emergency financial assistance and information to help navigate kidney disease-we want Canadians to know that we are here to help.”

EVA Air has teamed up with us this year as our prize sponsor. For every $250 that participants raise online, they’ll automatically get entered into a draw for a voucher good for two return economy-class tickets from Toronto to select cities within EVA Air’s Asia route map.

The Kidney Foundation appreciates our national partner Otsuka Canada Pharmaceutical Inc., national media sponsor Yes TV, and prize sponsor EVA Air for their contributions toward making the Kidney Walk possible.
