The County of Simcoe has committed an additional $15 million over the next decade for construction of an expansion at Lakehead University’s Orillia campus. This County announced $10 million in 2009.
“Lakehead Orillia started with just 101 students, and today we have over 2,100 students pursuing their academic and career goals,” said Dr. Siddall. “This generous investment will help us grow to an estimated 3,500 students, offering new opportunities for the community and driving regional prosperity.”
The expansion comes at a time when Lakehead University’s impact on the local economy is already significant. In 2024, the university contributed $328 million to Orillia’s economy and $4.54 billion to Ontario’s GDP. Furthermore, Lakehead graduates enjoy an impressive employment rate, with 88% securing jobs within six months of graduation, a figure that rises to 97.4% after two years.
“Today’s $1.5 million investment kicks off a 10-year, $15 million commitment to further enhance post-secondary education in Simcoe County,” said County of Simcoe Warden Basil Clarke. “This investment will empower the next generation of innovators, helping our communities grow and thrive.”
The new building will create new academic spaces, including teaching areas, an Indigenous learning and gathering centre, and a centralized student services hub. It is expected that the expansion will enable Lakehead to offer 10 new programs by 2032. As planning progresses, the university will work closely with local industries and stakeholders to ensure the new programs align with the region’s economic needs.
Lakehead is currently conducting a feasibility study to determine the full fundraising requirements for the project.
“Lakehead’s investment in our students and communities has resulted in a remarkable transformation,” said Dr. Siddall. “This expansion will help us reach even more students from diverse backgrounds, many of whom face barriers to attending university. We are deeply grateful for the County’s ongoing support and look forward to the continued growth of our campus.”
