‘This transition marks a shift to a provincially directed recycling system, meaning the county will no longer be responsible for residential recycling collection,’ says warden

NEWS RELEASE
COUNTY OF SIMCOE
*************************
As part of a provincewide change in how recycling services are managed, Simcoe County will transfer residential recycling collection to Circular Materials starting on Jan. 1, 2026.

This adjustment is part of Ontario’s larger effort to standardize and improve recycling collection and processing throughout the province, moving the responsibility for collecting and processing recyclable materials from municipalities to producers.

“This transition marks a shift to a provincially directed recycling system, meaning the county will no longer be responsible for residential recycling collection,” said Warden Basil Clarke. “While we expect some challenges during the change, we’re committed to doing everything we can to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible for our residents.”

In this new setup, Circular Materials, which is a not-for-profit organization, will handle recycling services for single-family homes. The County of Simcoe will still provide garbage and organics collection and operate local waste drop-off facilities as usual.

As the county collaborates with Circular Materials to make this transition easy for residents, here are a few important updates:

The same collection day but different trucks and times

Your recycling will continue to be picked up on the same day using your current carts. The only change is that new trucks operated by Emterra will collect it on behalf of Circular Materials. Garbage and organics collections will remain with Miller Waste trucks representing the county. Collection schedules won’t change: garbage and recycling will alternate weeks while organics are collected weekly. Since these services use separate trucks from different contractors, collection times for recycling and organics may differ due to unique routing schedules. To ensure all materials get picked up, please have your recycling and organics at the curb by 7 a. m. (or 6 a. m. in certain downtown areas) on your scheduled day. Collections may happen at various times throughout the day.

A new contact for questions about recycling

If you have questions about recycling-like collection schedules, missed pickups or cart repairs-please reach out directly to Emterra by phone at 1-888-597-1541 or via email at [email protected]. For updates regarding garbage and organics, continue using the Simcoe County Collects App or contact Service Simcoe.

Additional materials accepted

The new recycling program means Ontarians can recycle similar materials curbside across the province-with more items being added that might not have been accepted before. Check out circularmaterials. ca/simcoe for details on what’s accepted.

<h3Changes at waste drop-off facilities Please note that starting Jan. 1, 2026, there’ll be a disposal fee for dropping off recyclables at county waste facilities since provincial funding covering net costs will end.

<h3Information on businesses and IC& I The county is currently discussing with provincial authorities about how small industrial, commercial, and institutional (IC& I) businesses will fit into this new program. We expect more information on this topic later this fall.

This shift aligns with Ontario’s initiative to hold producers of packaging and printed paper accountable under extended producer responsibility regulations. The county remains dedicated to providing quality waste services where possible while supporting residents through this transition period.
