Provincial police report that a man is now facing an upgraded charge of first-degree murder along with another count of first-degree murder following the deaths of two individuals in southwestern Ontario last month.
On the morning of Oct. 5, officers responded to a call at a home in Simcoe where they discovered 71-year-old Barbara Morgan deceased.
A 45-year-old man was initially arrested on a second-degree murder charge related to her death, which later confirmed him as her son.
According to OPP, on Oct. 16, officers located remains in a wooded area off Highway 6 and confirmed they belonged to 49-year-old Robert Sykes, who had been murdered.
The suspect has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and the earlier second-degree murder charge has been elevated.
Police stated that the accused is set to appear in court in Simcoe on Friday.
