Just south of the Grand River on Highway 6, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police were seen searching through the trees after a body was found in that area.
According to OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk, the remains were discovered around 6 p. m. Thursday and are thought to be related to an ongoing murder investigation in Simcoe.
Earlier this month, police found the body of 71-year-old Barbara Morgan in her home on Head Street South.
In the days that followed, concern has grown for Robert Sykes, Barbara’s downstairs tenant, who is still missing. Authorities believe he might be another victim.
On Oct. 10, Barbara’s son, 45-year-old Justin Morgan, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder regarding his mother’s death.
The police have not confirmed if the remains found in Caledonia belong to Robert Sykes. The Ontario Forensic Pathology Service will carry out a postmortem examination to determine identity and cause of death.
Investigators from OPP are asking the public for any helpful information.
If anyone was in the area on Oct. 5 between 10:30 p. m. and midnight and saw anything suspicious, they’re urged to contact law enforcement. Police indicate that even small details may turn out to be important.
Drivers with dashcams are encouraged to review their footage and reach out to Norfolk County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 with any information that could help investigators.
Residents can expect an increased police presence as this investigation moves forward.
If someone has a tip but wants to stay anonymous, they can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
