The rules about what you can toss in your blue bin have changed, starting today.
More items are now eligible for recycling since the province has transferred financial responsibility to producers under the blue box program.
As of today, you can continue recycling the same things as before.
However, new additions include food bags and wrappers such as bread bags, produce bags, frozen food wrappers, snack wrappers, cereal box liners, milk bags and drink pouches.
Large plastic bags are included on this updated list too. Coffee packaging is also recyclable now-this includes coffee bags, takeout coffee cups and lids, as well as empty and rinsed coffee pods.
You can also recycle toothpaste tubes now. The same goes for floss containers and deodorant tubes.
Your single-use food items like takeout containers and cutlery, cups, lids and straws can go into the blue box too. Blister packs used for pills or small electronics are accepted as well.
Paper laminates such as ice cream cartons can be recycled along with Styrofoam cups, trays, egg cartons and packing peanuts.
Please note that hardcover books, glass from windows or cups, and plastic toys can’t be recycled. It’s advised to return all alcoholic beverage containers to participating retailers.
