Residents of Sarnia-Lambton are invited to take part in the upcoming Polar Plunge fundraiser benefiting Special Olympics Ontario.

On February 21, participants will dive into a lined bin at Lambton College as part of this chilly adventure.

“Sarnia Fire has kindly agreed to fill it for us again this year,” said Organizer and Sarnia Police Service Cst. Jocelyne Paquette.

As of February 11, around 10 teams have signed up and more than $5,400 has been raised.

“We’d love to hit our goal of $25,000,” she mentioned. “This is our third year hosting the Polar Plunge locally, and we’ve brought in over $46,000 in the last two years.”

Paquette noted they have reached out to local high schools to encourage more team registrations.

People can sign up right until the event day. Registration kicks off at 11 a. m., with festivities starting at noon.

Paquette shared that participants can stay warm under a tent equipped with heaters while watching others make their plunge.

The registration fee is $40 per person. However, if someone raises $50 or more (or $40 for students), their registration fee will be waived.

If you’re interested in registering or donating, you can do so through the Polar Plunge website.

A record-setting $1.1 million was raised across Ontario last year for Special Olympics Ontario.

“They’re a fantastic organization. The funds help kids attend various sports events and keep programs running,” said Paquette.

The local event will feature a barbecue, where food and hot chocolate will be available for purchase, along with a 50/50 draw.

This January, Chatham-Kent’s ninth annual Polar Plunge raised $50,016.
