As southern Ontario experiences the heart of winter, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have once again highlighted the dangers associated with snowmobiling.
Ontario Snowmobile Safety Week runs from February 9 to February 16, and the OPP is encouraging snowmobile riders to familiarize themselves with safe riding practices.
The OPP report that 145 snowmobilers lost their lives in OPP-patrolled areas between the winter of 2014-2015 and the winter of 2023-2024. Recently, a snowmobiler died northwest of Chesley late Thursday night.
Some tips for snowmobilers provided by the OPP include sticking to marked trails, following speed limits, wearing protective gear, and planning your route beforehand.
Ciliska emphasized that riding on frozen waterways comes with its own set of hazards.
“Riders are reminded that frozen lakes and rivers carry an inherent degree of uncertainty about how safe they are, and the only way to ensure one’s safety is to avoid frozen waterways altogether,” said Ciliska.
You can find information on snowmobile safety on the official Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs website.
