According to Environment Canada, December in Sarnia was wetter than usual.

On December 28, the city broke a record by receiving 39.2 millimetres of rain, snow, and snow melt during several storms, exceeding the old record of 17.8 millimetres set in 1959.

This followed a significant weather system that brought a heavy mix of precipitation, affecting travel throughout southern Ontario on Boxing Day, December 26.

The national weather agency reported that six to eight hours of freezing rain in parts of southwestern Ontario led to multiple accidents and power outages.

A transformer in Sarnia failed due to the weight of the ice, and tree branches took down power lines from Point Edward to Bright’s Grove.

Typically, Sarnia sees about 60 millimetres of precipitation in December as per Environment Canada.

Last month, the total precipitation recorded was 91.9 millimetres, just shy of the record from December 2008 which was 93 millimetres.

Environment Canada noted that overall, December was cooler than average across Ontario.

The average daytime high temperature in Sarnia for December is around 2 Celsius.
