Environment and Climate Change Canada is warning that regions near Lake Erie will experience a significant winter storm expected to bring a tough weekend for 30 U. S. states.

Some meteorologists in the U. S. refer to this system, which stretches over a large part of the continental U. S., as “a generational storm.”

“It’s a very, very large system,” said Meteorologist Eric Thomlinson. “It will intensify as it taps into that Gulf [of Mexico] moisture, and with all of that moisture that it’s picking up, it has quite a large area of precipitation, and it’s the northern edge that could impact us.”

People in the U. S. are preparing for extreme cold, rain, freezing rain, and snow.

Thomlinson thinks the effects in Southwestern Ontario won’t be as severe but mentioned models indicating bitter cold for Friday and Saturday along with snow on Sunday.

“Since the system is passing south of Ontario, areas closer to Lake Erie and the Greater Toronto Area are really being monitored for higher snowfall amounts,” said Thomlinson, suggesting Windsor and Chatham-Kent could receive around 10 cm of snow.

He warned that there’s still some uncertainty in the models; however, they should have a clearer picture of potential impacts by Friday.

The current models show temperatures overnight on Friday dropping to -21 C.

As we head into early next week, Thomlinson stated temperatures would rise slightly but not much. He predicted daytime highs ranging from -5 C to -10 C.
