Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew says he’s open to discussing a proposed west-east pipeline put forward by leaders in Alberta and Ontario.

Kinew believes this pipeline could strengthen Canada, and there are many workers in his province ready to take part in its construction.

However, he emphasizes that significant projects like pipelines need to be handled carefully, addressing environmental issues and ensuring Indigenous governments are involved.

At a meeting of premiers in Charlottetown, Kinew mentioned he’s “willing to entertain” the pipeline proposal introduced by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Ontario Premier Doug Ford earlier this month.

The pipeline would run 3,300 kilometres from Hardisty, Alta., to refineries in Sarnia, Ont., passing through Saskatchewan and Manitoba without entering the U. S.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has already expressed his support for the project.

Smith and Ford noted that the pipeline would transport 500,000 barrels of crude oil daily and decrease Canada’s reliance on imported refined oil.

Ontario plans to complete a feasibility study that includes cost estimates and a construction timeline before the year’s end.
