Leamington has announced that a local rental unit manager has faced fines due to violations of the Ontario Fire Code.

A routine check by Leamington Fire Services resulted in six citations for not installing smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, leading to fines amounting to $1,920.

Three of these citations were related to the absence of smoke alarms, while the other three were for missing CO detectors.

“Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives,” said Fire Chief Don Williamson. “Ensuring that these devices are properly installed and maintained in every level of a home and outside sleeping areas is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect residents from fire and carbon monoxide hazards.”

Recent updates to the Fire Code require functioning smoke and CO detectors on every level of a home as well as outside each sleeping area. Landlords and property managers need to ensure these devices are kept up-to-date.

Fire officials are using this situation as an opportunity to remind residents to regularly check their CO and smoke alarms, replacing batteries when necessary.

You can find complete information about the Ontario Fire Code relevant to Leamington on the fire service’s official website.
