As promised by Boralex in 2024, the energy storage facility at the Lakeshore/Tilbury municipal boundary is now fully operational.
Quebec-based renewable energy company Boralex announced that its $180 million, 80-megawatt facility went online this week. It’s equivalent to powering 80,000 homes.
The facility will deliver four hours of continuous power to the grid by storing power with 89 Tesla Megapack 2XL lithium-ion battery systems.
The facility is directly connected to nearby Hydro One infrastructure, providing reliable power capacity by drawing and storing energy from the grid during off-peak periods and releasing it back to the Ontario grid when energy demand is at its peak.
A Boralex spokesperson told CK News Today the systems have all been tested to ensure they meet all performance and safety requirements.
Robin Deveaux, Boralex North America Executive Vice President and General Manager, noted the local project is part of an effort designed to make renewable energy more accessible and affordable for all.
The facility was selected through the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to help meet growing electricity capacity demand while enhancing grid reliability and resilience.
According to Boralex, a Community Benefit Agreement with Lakeshore will provide $1,000 per megawatt annually for the life of the project to support local initiatives.

Projects like this one strengthen our energy infrastructure and deliver long-term benefits for Lakeshore residents and businesses,” said Lakeshore Mayor Tracey Bailey.
The project was developed in “close collaboration” with Walpole Island First Nation.
