Lambton College has received new funding to enhance its Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) Laboratory.

The college recently secured more than $1.77 million from the Ontario Research Fund and the Canada Foundation for Innovation to better equip and expand the facility, creating more opportunities.

Lambton College mentioned that the BSL2 Lab is one of just a few certified facilities of its kind.

The lab’s research centers on microorganisms and biological materials tied to biotechnology, environmental sustainability, and industrial innovation.

The post-secondary institution also received $701,013 for the Canadian Material Circular Economy Syndicate from the Ontario Research Fund.

“These investments through the Ontario Research Fund and Canada Foundation for Innovation are a significant vote of confidence in Lambton College’s research expertise and our role in supporting Ontario’s innovation ecosystem,” said Lambton College President and CEO Rob Kardas. “By strengthening infrastructure in circular economy research and biotechnology, we are better positioned to support industry partners, prepare highly skilled graduates, and deliver solutions that help protect Ontario’s economic resilience, environmental sustainability, and long-term competitiveness.”

The Canada Foundation for Innovation is a non-profit organization that invests in research infrastructure at Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit institutions. The Ontario Research Fund supports building, renovating, and acquiring state-of-the-art research infrastructure.

The Ontario Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security awarded over $47 million in funding to back 195 research projects at universities, colleges, and hospitals across the province.

Lambton College ranks among the top five research colleges in Canada according to Research Infosource’s 2025 list.
