A First Nation in southwestern Ontario is still waiting for answers regarding the size and cause of a pipeline leak in Sarnia, days after it was first reported.

Aamjiwnaang First Nation has raised concerns after discovering a spill on March 11 along the southern fence line of Suncor’s Sarnia refinery, which is next to its reserve.

This week, the First Nation issued a news release stating that reports confirm fuel products have leaked into both the ground and the St. Clair River.

Suncor indicated that its preliminary investigation suggests a third party may be responsible for the release.

Sun-Canadian, which manages a refined oil pipeline from Sarnia to Toronto, stated it was informed about the potential leak on March 12 and began investigating its system.

In their statement, they mentioned that “containment and recovery measures have been deployed,” but did not provide immediate information about the size or origin of the leak.

The regulator for Ontario’s pipelines noted that the affected section of pipeline has been shut down while an investigation continues.

This report by The Canadian Press was first March 19, 2026.
