The Ontario Provincial Police has finished its Festive RIDE campaign for this year, and Essex County recorded the highest number of impaired driving charges compared to any other county in the West Region.

The campaign began on November 20 and ended on New Year’s Day.

“West Region remains committed to keeping our roads safe through proactive RIDE programs and focused impaired-driving enforcement efforts,” said OPP West Region Traffic and Marine Manager Inspector Michael Mc Connell. “We remind all drivers to plan ahead, make responsible choices, and always drive sober.”

Throughout the West Region, OPP officers carried out 3,095 Festive RIDE spot checks, marking the largest amount of checks in five years.

A total of 269 impaired driving charges were made along with 40 warning-range suspensions. This is an increase from last year’s 187 charges and 19 warning-range suspensions.

The OPP held 375 Festive RIDE events in Essex County, where they charged 54 drivers with impaired driving and suspended two drivers after they fell into the warning range.

Across Ontario, there were a total of 1,268 impaired driving charges.
