A Raleigh Township man has been charged in connection to a fatal crash in Charing Cross that killed two sisters trying to rescue a turtle.

On Tuesday, Chatham-Kent police reported a 24-year-old male driver was charged last week with two counts of careless driving causing death.

Police previously reported the victims, 66 and 68 years old, were struck on Charing Cross Road near Horton Line on May 18 after stopping their car on the side of the road to help a turtle.

Teresa Suliga’s obituary stated that she was “enamoured with the world” and loved to experience new things, to travel, and garden.

“Teresa’s greatest love was her family and taking care of animals,” read the obituary.

Elizabeth Seremak’s obituary stated that she was known for her generous heart and helping spirit.

“She loved to spend time with her family and especially her treasured grandchildren. Elizabeth’s extended family and friends will miss her sense of humour and love of animals and nature,” the obituary read.

The driver who hit them stayed at the scene of the crash and called 911, according to police.

“Two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle, and despite life-saving efforts, both women tragically succumbed to their injuries,” said police. “The Chatham-Kent Police extend their heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragedy during this difficult time.”

The suspect is scheduled to appear in provincial offences court on December 17.
