York Regional Police have shared a video that captures four individuals breaking into a residence in Richmond Hill, Ont., early on Monday morning.
In a news release on Tuesday, police stated they are looking for five suspects total, which includes a getaway driver.
The home invasion took place near Bayview Avenue and Ambler Lane. Officers were called to the scene around 3:30 a. m. Monday.
Const. James Dickson, spokesperson for York Regional Police, mentioned in an interview on Tuesday that the incident seems to have been planned.
“Now this is quite a concerning home invasion because this is happening overnight at three in the morning. This is when everyone’s expected to be in bed at home,” Dickson said.
The video shows four individuals forcing their way into the house.
Three of them walk up the steps; one kicks the door while another appears to hold it shut. Then, the person holding the door kicks it twice before breaking it open. The footage then shows all four entering the home.
According to police, they confronted the homeowner and demanded cash. At least one of them was armed with a firearm.
“Very clearly, you can see at least one male has a hammer in his hand and a second male is armed with a firearm,” Dickson said.
“They’re pulling people out of bed in the middle of the night and made a demand for cash. Very fortunately, nobody was injured in this incident.”
The four suspects escaped in a dark-colored sedan driven by another person. Police have not yet released descriptions of any of the suspects involved.
A small amount of property was taken during this event, according to Dickson.
Dickson emphasized that these types of home invasions where suspects confront homeowners are particularly alarming. He advised that personal safety should always be considered if anyone finds themselves in such situations.
“Property can be replaced, but lives cannot, especially when we’re dealing with people that are willing to come in here and confront someone in the middle of the night with a firearm,” he said. “We don’t know who this person is; we don’t know what they’re capable of, and the last thing we want to do is see someone hurt.”
Anyone with information is urged to call police.
