York police have charged a 71-year-old doctor with allegedly sexually assaulting a patient back in 2016.
The investigation started in April after a victim came forward, claiming that Brian Sheffield assaulted her during a medical exam in July 2016, according to a news release issued Thursday.
“The suspect touched the victim for a sexual purpose and conducted no other examinations,” the release said.
Sheffield has been practicing as a doctor in Richmond Hill. Authorities believe there could be additional victims.
Anyone with information is urged to reach out to police or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
Those who aren’t ready to report but need support are encouraged to contact York Region Victim Services, the Cedar Centre, or the Women’s Support Network, as mentioned in the release.
Sheffield’s registration page on the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) website indicates he worked at The Doctor’s Office, located at 9625 Yonge St. The page shows he was charged in February.
In an email to CBC Toronto, CPSO spokesperson Laura Zilke stated that the college is aware of the charge but cannot provide comments beyond what’s available on their physician register due to confidentiality rules.
She added that the CPSO website contains information about how individuals can file a complaint against a doctor.
“The college is committed to serving in the public interest and ensuring patients receive care in a safe and professional environment,” Zilke said.
