A 47-year-old man has died following a shooting in Richmond Hill on Thursday evening, and police are looking for at least two suspects, according to York Regional Police.
In a news release on Friday, authorities confirmed that the victim was identified as Issam Saad from Richmond Hill.
The incident took place near Parker Avenue and Poplar Drive, close to Yonge Street and King Road. Police received reports of the shooting around 6:50 p. m.
Officers discovered Saad lying on the road with gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The police have stated that his cause of death was gunshot wounds.
Const. James Dickson, a spokesperson for York Regional Police, told reporters on Thursday night that they believe the shooting was targeted and not random.
Shortly after the shooting occurred, officers were called to a vehicle fire at King Road and Dufferin Street where they found a Honda Pilot engulfed in flames.
“We do believe that this vehicle is directly connected with the shooting,” Dickson said.
The motive behind the shooting remains unknown.
No descriptions of suspects have been released yet.
A significant police presence was noted in the area during their investigation on Thursday night.
“At this time, there is no immediate information to suggest that there is any ongoing threat to public safety,” Dickson said.
Police set up a command post at a local public school later that night.
Witnesses who haven’t spoken with police or anyone who has surveillance video-including dashboard camera or doorbell footage-are encouraged to contact authorities.
