A 47-year-old man has died following a shooting in Richmond Hill on Thursday evening, and authorities are looking for at least two suspects, according to York Regional Police.
In a news release on Friday, police confirmed that the victim was identified as Issam Saad from Richmond Hill by the chief coroner’s office.
The incident took place near Parker Avenue and Poplar Drive, close to Yonge Street and King Road. Officers received reports of gunfire around 6:50 p. m. and arrived at the scene.
Upon arrival, they found Saad on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death has been established as gunshot wounds, according to police.
Const. James Dickson, a spokesperson for York Regional Police, mentioned during a press conference on Thursday night that investigators believe this shooting was targeted and not random.
Shortly after the shooting occurred, law enforcement responded to a vehicle fire nearby at King Road and Dufferin Street. They discovered a Honda Pilot engulfed in flames.
“We do believe that this vehicle is directly connected with the shooting,” Dickson stated.
Authorities have yet to determine what motivated the attack.
No details about potential suspects have been shared with the public so far.
A significant police presence was noted in the area as investigations were underway Thursday night.
“At this time, there is no immediate information to suggest that there is any ongoing threat to public safety,” Dickson said.
A command post was established by police at a nearby public school later that evening.
If there are any witnesses who haven’t spoken with police or anyone who may have surveillance footage-whether from dash cams or doorbell cameras-they’re encouraged to reach out to law enforcement for assistance.
