RICHMOND HILL – Construction has officially started on The Village of Westbrook Lane, a new 240-bed long-term care home located at 11300 Yonge Street in Richmond Hill. This project is part of Ontario’s larger plan to create 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds throughout the province.

To tackle rising construction costs, the province is offering a Construction Funding Subsidy. Launched in 2022, this subsidy provides eligible long-term care projects with an extra $35 per bed per day for 25 years, along with additional support for non-profit operators. The Westbrook Lane facility will take advantage of this subsidy.

The building features a “main street” concept on the ground floor that includes a library, community centre, hair salon, chapel, and other amenities. Above this area, there will be eight resident home sections that provide dining and living spaces for up to 32 residents each, encouraging a more personal and community-focused atmosphere. One of these sections will focus on memory care programs while another will cater to specialized physical care needs. The entire facility will also have air conditioning.

Ontario’s Minister of Long-Term Care, Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, highlighted the government’s dedication to enhancing long-term care services. “Our government is fixing long-term care by getting shovels in the ground and ensuring residents can get care where and when they need it,” she stated.

In addition to increasing capacity for care, Schlegel Villages plans to establish a “living classroom” within the facility for Seneca Polytechnic students. This program aims to offer practical training experiences for personal support workers and other health professionals.

The development is projected to open its doors in 2027.
