York Regional Police are searching for 5 suspects after a smash-and-grab theft caught on digital camera at a Richmond Hill jewellery retailer on Monday afternoon.

A cellphone video of the theft at Hillcrest Mall circulating on social media reveals 4 masked males smashing a number of show instances contained in the Peoples Jewellers retailer. Police say the theft occurred round 4 p.m. 

At one level, one of many thieves seems to assault a retailer worker as he appears via the secure.

Const. James Dickson, spokesperson for York Regional Police, says a girl suffered minor accidents in what he known as an “extremely brazen” theft.

“This woman was fortuitously not critically injured, however clearly very shaken up, and he or she was dragged behind the counter,” Dickson mentioned.

Dickson mentioned the worker was in a position to get away and be a part of different staff in a again room.

Police mentioned the masked males then ran out of the mall to the car parking zone, the place a driver was ready in a getaway car. The black Nissan Maxima was stolen from Toronto and has since been recovered, police mentioned.

Lornes Katami, who works at a magnificence salon subsequent to the jewellery retailer, mentioned he watched firsthand because the thieves made off with hundreds of {dollars} value of jewellery.

“First, we thought it was like capturing, as a result of the banging on the glass was so loud,” Katami mentioned.

“They have been hitting very laborious, after which they seize the stuff they usually simply ran away.”

Police are asking anybody who witnessed the theft or who might have cellphone or dashboard digital camera video to come back ahead.
