Photo by Claire McCormack You can check out a tall ship in Port Elgin this Saturday. The TS Playfair is docked here. It’s a training vessel operated by Brigs Youth Sail Training, where they sail, eat, and sleep on the tall ship.
They also get to visit ports and enjoy campfires among other activities. They just wrapped up a “Great Lakes Hopper” course from Hamilton to Port Elgin, and are about to kick off the “Mission to Manitoulin” course from July thirteenth to twenty sixth that concludes in Owen Sound. Tours of the ship, which is located in the Port Elgin Harbour, will be available Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m. Brigs Youth Sail Training is a nonprofit organization that teaches young people aged 13 to 18 leadership skills and how to sail a tall ship. Their website states, “Our goal is the provision of an environment, aboard ship and in the Winter Program (classroom based) that fosters and rewards self-confidence, teamwork, responsibility, custodianship and leadership in youth.” They mention that apart from the captain and first mate, all crew members are between 13 and 18 years old. The Playfair was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II and built in 1973 in Kingston.
