Port Stanley, Ont., is preparing to welcome the public to its beaches by the end of June.

The Mayor of Central Elgin, Sally Martyn, stated that they and other towns in Elgin County will open their beaches on June 22.

“We are working very closely with Southwestern Public Health to make sure we can open them safely and looking at all of the rules we will possibly put in place.”

This news follows Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s announcement earlier this week that all beaches and outdoor patios would be allowed to reopen starting Friday, part of Phase 2 in the province’s reopening plan.

To ensure safety, Martyn mentioned that the beach will have patrols to help everyone maintain proper physical distancing and added they’re asking anyone feeling unwell to stay home.

There will also be signs along the way to the beach, informing visitors whether it’s open and if there’s enough space. A Facebook page called Central Elgin Beach Rescue will share the same updates.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, Martyn noted that there have only been three cases of COVID-19 reported in their area, with none since late April.

“This will bring in tourists, but the biggest problem is a lot of residents are worried about what else it will bring in.”

Despite some concerns, she mentioned that many local businesses are excited about more tourists coming into town.

Carol Gates, owner of GT’s on the Beach restaurant, said they’ve already lost about 30 percent of their season due to closures.

“It has been really rough,” Gates shared. “We were closed up until a couple of weeks ago, and we opened for takeout only, but sales can’t possibly make up for a busy patio.”

The restaurant is located right on the beach where officials have allowed them to extend their patio space so guests can follow physical distancing guidelines.

For now, Gates said they’ll also only offer table service without any beach volleyball or live music events happening yet.
