Drivers passing through downtown Port Elgin should get ready for some delays starting next week.
The first phase of the Ministry of Transportation’s Connecting Link Program will start road repair work on Goderich Street (Highway 21) on Monday. The section of road between Concession 6 and Concession 10 will be resurfaced, its historic brick intersections restored, and some minor underground infrastructure improvements made.
This initial phase includes replacing underground services and interlocking bricks at the intersections of Gustavus Street and Green Street.
Following that, the second phase will commence on May 19 with further underground service replacements and interlocking brick work at the intersections of Mill Street and Elgin Street, along with new asphalt laid down between Market Street and Emma Street.
Each of these first two phases is anticipated to take around four to five weeks to finish.
The downtown project is prioritized so it can be completed before the peak tourism season kicks in.
A schedule for the remaining three phases hasn’t been announced yet. Phases 3 through 5 will involve paving and replacing underground infrastructure along Goderich Street from Ivings Drive to Concession 6, as well as sections from Emma Street to Concession 6, and Market Street to Concession 10. The public will be informed once specific start dates are set.
Goderich Street will be closed in segments while underground services are put in place. Detour routes have been arranged to help drivers navigate around the construction. Pedestrians will still have access to downtown businesses throughout this time, and alternate parking areas will be available.
