8:00 p. m. Update

The West Region OPP has announced that the heightened police presence concluded south of Port Elgin between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road as of 7:30 p. m. They confirmed there is no threat to public safety.

7:00 p. m. Update

A reader has shared some photos taken in Port Elgin earlier today.

At 6:48 p. m., Saugeen Shores Police posted on social media:

“On February 21st, 2026, Saugeen Shores Police responded to a serious motor vehicle collision in the area of Goderich Street and Gustavus Street in the Town of Port Elgin.

This is an active investigation involving both the Saugeen Shores Police and the Ontario Provincial Police. There are no concerns for public safety. No further details will be released at this time.”

6:20 p. m. Update

Saugeen Shores Police reported that as of 6:00 p. m., the intersection of Gustavus Street and Goderich Street in Port Elgin has reopened.

Owen Sound Current reached out to the Ontario Provincial Police for clarification on various details circulating online, such as whether anyone was in custody, reports of injuries from a multi-vehicle accident at Goderich and Gustavus, and rumors about a possible police chase.

In response, OPP stated: “This investigation is in the early stages. Additional information will be provided when it is available.”

No further details have been released by police at this time.

The OPP West Region announced a heavy police presence along with road closures on Bruce-Saugeen Townline at 4:44 p. m. on Saturday, as social media users reported a significant incident possibly involving a police pursuit.

“Bruce-Saugeen Townline is fully closed south of Port Elgin between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road. A heavy police presence is noted in the area. Motorists should plan an alternate route,” read the post shared via OPP West Region account with South Bruce OPP identification.

Saugeen Shores Police quickly reposted the OPP notice and included an additional location – the area around Gustavus Street and Goderich Street – to avoid.

This notice assured there’s no danger to the public.

Owen Sound Current will keep reporting on this incident as more information becomes available.
