Work is progressing on a state-of-the-art training facility at the Pickering nuclear plant to aid in the refurbishment of Units 5 to 8, which is set to kick off in early 2027.

This training hub will be “critical” for preparing the over 2,800 skilled trades workers required for Ontario Power Generation’s refurbishment project in Pickering, according to Samad Kasaai, OPG’s Vice-President of Major Projects.

“It ensures our staff are fully equipped with the skills and confidence needed to deliver a successful refurbishment of Pickering Units 5 to 8,” he noted, adding that this facility represents an investment in “workplace readiness and safety.”

The new 200,000-square-foot Retube Feeder and Boiler Replacement Training and Mock-up facility is specifically designed, similar to the full-scale reactor mock-up facility used for training during OPG’s Darlington nuclear refurbishment, which was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

This dedicated center will include detailed mock-ups of the Pickering reactor design and its components. It will also feature a training mock-up of Pickering’s lower boiler assembly, which is a unique aspect of this refurbishment.

Alongside the reactor mock-ups, the facility will provide steam generator boiler bottom mock-ups, classrooms for training sessions, a welding shop offering practical hands-on learning opportunities, as well as space for safely storing refurbishment components to support efficient project execution.

The training center is expected to be finished by December.

After its completion, the refurbished Pickering Nuclear plant will continue providing reliable low-carbon electricity for about two million homes while creating more than 30,000 jobs each year during the refurbishment phase and maintaining around 7,500 jobs annually throughout its operational lifespan.

The dedicated facility will provide a training mock-up of Pickering’s lower boiler assembly, a unique aspect to the refurbishment in Pickering.
