Oshawa, Clarington, Pickering amongst massive metropolis mayors asking for assist with homelessness disaster

Ontario’s massive metropolis mayors have put a name out to the provincial and federal governments to assist them with the homelessness disaster.

“A humanitarian crisis is unfolding on our streets, and urgent action is needed to support those living unsheltered,” stated Regional Councillor Willie Woo, Clarington’s consultant with the Ontario Massive Metropolis Mayors (OBCM). “Clarington stands with the Ontario Big City Mayors Solve the Crisis Campaign, urging [the] provincial and federal governments to take swift action on homelessness, mental health, and addiction.”

The OBCM despatched this listing of requests to Queen’s Park and Parliament Hill;

• The province to nominate a devoted Minister and Ministry with the mandatory funding and authority to deal with housing wants and supply complete psychological well being and dependancy assist.
• The provincial authorities to type a process drive with broad sector representatives to create a Made in Ontario Motion Plan, involving the federal authorities within the discussions.
• Each ranges of presidency present sustainable funding to assist municipalities in serving to people with psychological well being and addictions, together with those that are unsheltered or from susceptible populations.

“Municipalities are at their limit,” Woo’s assertion reads. “We need provincial and federal intervention.”

On Thursday, Premier Doug Ford responded to the mayors.

“Mayors from across Ontario have asked for our help to deal with homeless encampments that are taking over public spaces and making their communities unsafe. I agree. Enough is enough. Today, I let them know that we will be stepping up with new measures to protect communities and clear out encampments while getting people the help they need.”

His assertion additionally included an announcement of extra funding to create extra capability in shelters and the power and accountability for officers to take away encampments.
