An Oshawa man is facing charges for impaired driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and nine other offenses after a police cruiser was hit at a Pickering intersection early Wednesday morning.

Two cruisers were responding to a call just after 3 a. m. when they turned left onto Kingston Road from Whites Road. A driver in an eastbound Audi SUV allegedly ran a red light, barely missed colliding with the first police car, and then sped through the intersection, crashing into the second cruiser.

The Audi driver attempted to run away on foot, but officers caught up with him and placed him under arrest.

The officer in the struck cruiser was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Alberto-Marius Renghea, 24, has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to assist at an accident scene, running a red light, refusing a breathalyzer test and several other driving-related offenses while operating his Audi with only a G1 license.

He has been released on an undertaking.
