Three individuals have lost their lives, and two others are hospitalized with serious injuries after a collision involving two SUVs in Pickering.

Emergency services, including officers from the Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) Toronto detachment, responded to the scene on Highway 7 near Concession Road 6 around 7 p. m. on Tuesday.

According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, a westbound SUV veered into the eastbound lanes and struck another SUV traveling east on the highway.

An 82-year-old woman from Port Perry, Ont., who was the only occupant of the eastbound vehicle, was declared dead at the scene.

<p Two of the four occupants in the westbound SUV were also pronounced dead at the site: a 63-year-old woman from Markham and a 68-year-old woman from Scarborough, both sitting in the back seat of that vehicle.

The driver of the westbound SUV, a 64-year-old man from Markham, suffered critical injuries along with a third passenger, a 70-year-old man from Richmond Hill, who was seated in front.

The exact cause of this tragic incident is still under investigation.

“At this time we do not believe weather or environment factors or mechanical issues contributed to this crash. There is no indication of alcohol at this time. The investigation is still ongoing,” Schmidt said.

The police indicated that all passengers were likely wearing their seatbelts during the collision.
