BWX Applied sciences yesterday introduced contracts price a complete worth of greater than $1 billion for 2 nuclear power initiatives that may allow Ontario Energy Technology’s (OPG) life extension of the Pickering Nuclear Producing Station, and the deployment of a small modular reactor (SMR) on the Darlington website.

Underneath the primary contract, BWXT stated it’ll manufacture 48 steam mills at its Cambridge facility for the Pickering life extension program. The mission will create greater than 250 trades positions, together with welders, fitters, and machinists, in addition to add engineers and supporting workers. The length of the mission can be greater than seven years.

BWXT is performing the work for its buyer CanAtom, a three way partnership between AtkinsRéalis and Aecon.

The Pickering Life Extension Program is in its preliminary phases and can allow the Pickering “B” fleet of reactors to function for an extra 30 years. BWXT states that the work is anticipated to be accomplished within the mid-2030s. Pickering options 4 working Candu reactors and accounts for about 10 per cent of Ontario’s electrical energy wants.

“By refurbishing existing assets at Pickering Nuclear, and building SMRs at the Darlington New Nuclear Project, OPG is helping Ontario meet rapidly growing demand for low-carbon, reliable baseload nuclear energy,” stated Nicolle Butcher, OPG President CEO.

BWXT stated the BWRX-300 scheduled for the OPG Darlington New Nuclear Venture is on monitor to be the primary on-grid SMR amongst G7 nations. The design is a 300-MWe water-cooled, pure circulation SMR with passive security programs that leverages the design and licensing foundation of GEH’s U.S. NRC-certified ESBWR.

Ontario Minister of Vitality and Electrification Stephen Lecce joined BWXT at its Cambridge facility for the announcement.

“Ontario needs more nuclear energy to meet growing electricity demand, and it’s our province’s highly skilled workers that will make it all possible,” stated Stephen Lecce, Minister of Vitality and Electrification.
