A 15-year-old was airlifted to a trauma center in Toronto following a risky incident where they jumped from a bridge in Peterborough and hit a passing boat, according to police.
Peterborough County Ontario Provincial Police, along with EMS and fire services, responded to Mc Farlane Street around 4:45 p. m. on Saturday after bystanders reported that a young person had leaped from the bridge into the water.
Authorities say the teen jumped just as a large vessel was moving beneath the bridge. The youth collided with the boat before entering the water but did not come up immediately.
Friends who witnessed the event jumped in to assist before first responders arrived and helped pull the teen from the water. They were then taken to a local hospital before being airlifted by ORNGE Air Ambulance to a trauma center in Toronto.
The bridge was closed while officers conducted their investigation of the scene.
OPP are warning everyone that jumping off bridges is very dangerous due to hidden risks like shallow water, underwater debris, strong currents, and potential collisions with boats. Police state that such actions also put bystanders, boat operators, and emergency responders in jeopardy.
