Woodward Inc. Plans Move from Ontario to Poland

A company specializing in aerospace and industrial systems, which received recognition from Canada’s defence minister, has announced plans to shift its operations from Ontario to Poland in 2027.

On Tuesday, Woodward Inc. informed its workers at the Peterborough, Ont., location about the decision to shut down the facility and move production to one of its sites in Krakow, Poland.

The closure is set to be finalized by the end of August 2027 and will affect approximately 165 employees.

Woodward, based in Fort Collins, Colo., operates facilities globally. It took over the Peterborough site from Safran in July 2025 and uses it for manufacturing specialized electromechanical systems for aviation.

“After reviewing operations, financial goals, and anticipated customer demand, we determined the Peterborough site is not suited to support future growth,” the company stated in a message to late Tuesday afternoon.

“The facility is scheduled to close on Aug. 31, 2027. We recognize the real impact this move has on the people working at our Peterborough site and are committed to managing the transition thoughtfully and respectfully, as well as in line with our obligations.”

This announcement contrasts with what federal defence minister David Mc Guinty and Peterborough MP Emma Harrison mentioned during their visit to the facility in November 2025. Mc Guinty highlighted increased defence spending noted in the federal budget and pointed out that this facility had potential for growth.

Woodward says that production will be transferred in phases from Peterborough to Krakow, which it claims has sufficient capacity for both current work and long-term operational needs.

“The location is also well-suited for serving European customers and is close to key suppliers,” according to the company’s statement. “Engineering support currently based in Peterborough will move to Krakow and Sofia, Bulgaria.”

Woodward has communicated with the union representing employees who are part of the bargaining unit at Peterborough.

“We will continue to engage with the union in good faith and in accordance with applicable laws,” said the company.
