PORT HOPE, ONT.- The Ontario government has revealed it will invest over $5 million via the Skills Development Fund (SDF) Training Stream to assist more than 2,900 youth, job seekers, and apprentices in Northumberland and Peterborough.

The government is collaborating with four local organizations to provide free training programs aimed at supporting youth, apprentices, and underrepresented groups, including:

Junior Achievement of Northern and Eastern Ontario, which is set to receive a $609,398 investment for its Empowerment of Youth in Skilled Trades project. This initiative aims to promote careers in skilled trades to 2,650 students through practical training, mentorship opportunities, and paid placements for 40 students in high-demand fields like construction, manufacturing, motive power, and aviation. Northumberland Builders and Construction Association Inc. will get $230,240 to offer onsite training for 100 participants through the purchase of a mobile training trailer. Nventure Business Development Corporation is awarded $562,000 to enhance career suitability for 100 participants by creating Canada’s first Virtual Reality recruitment and retention tool tailored for the manufacturing sector. OPCMIA Local 598 Training Centre will receive $3,947,100 for their Restoring Ontario and Restoring Port Hope projects. This funding will support 60 apprentices in the brick and stone mason as well as cement finisher trades while also training 36 pre-apprentices in restoration masonry trade for an upcoming restoration project in downtown Port Hope.
