Two men in their 20s have died following a potential drowning incident just northeast of Peterborough, Ont., on Sunday, according to provincial police.
Peterborough police received a report shortly before 5 p. m. about two individuals who had gone missing in the waters at Burleigh Falls in Stony Lake, located roughly 30 kilometers from Peterborough, as stated by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in a news release on Monday.
The two men were reportedly swimming in the area when one fell from the shore and seemed to be struggling, police reported. Others nearby jumped in to assist but ended up causing a second person to go missing as well.
Rescue teams from Peterborough police and fire services searched the water and surrounding areas on Sunday but were unable to locate the two missing individuals, according to OPP.
On Monday, divers from OPP’s underwater search and recovery unit found and retrieved their bodies.
A 24-year-old man from Caledon and a 26-year-old man from Brampton were pronounced dead at the scene, police confirmed. No further details about the victims were released by authorities.
