For greater than half a century Algonquin School has maintained a campus in Perth, about an hour southwest of Ottawa. As of subsequent 12 months, that relationship will come to an finish.

Rising monetary challenges linked to the federal cap on worldwide college students is being blamed for Algonquin’s resolution to shut the satellite campus, with the faculty going through a $32 million loss in income this 12 months, a quantity that’s anticipated to leap to $60 million for 2025-26 and almost $100 million the next 12 months.

“Algonquin College has been a cornerstone of our community since 1970,” stated Mayor Judy Brown. “For over five decades, the Perth campus has provided invaluable educational opportunities, shaped countless careers, and strengthened the fabric of our town. Its heritage trades programs, in particular, have left a lasting legacy that can be seen in the beautiful heritage buildings that define our community.”

The Perth campus has additionally performed an important function in supporting schooling and abilities improvement in a rural setting, making post-secondary schooling accessible to native residents, in addition to these with a want to attend a smaller campus, she added.

“Education opportunities in rural communities are essential. They ensure that people can learn, grow, and thrive without leaving their hometowns. Algonquin CEO Claude Brulé stated in a memo the worldwide pupil cap and funding shortfalls from the province have led to “unprecedented financial challenges” for post-secondary schooling in Ontario.

“These are the most challenging fiscal times in the college’s history. I understand how morale is being negatively impacted and employees and learners may be feeling concerned and anxious as they await updates,” Brulé stated.

The cap has resulted in a drop of just about 50 per cent in admissions and a $752 million spending shortfall for Ontario faculties, leading to slashed packages throughout the province.
