Most school buses in midwestern Ontario stayed off the roads for a second consecutive day as lake effect snow continues to cover the area.
The snow squalls moved in Wednesday night after an Alberta clipper and are anticipated to bring an extra 20 to 40 centimetres from Thursday into Thursday night. Environment Canada has indicated that snowfall totals will vary widely across the region.
The national weather agency has issued a yellow-level snow squall warning for Huron County, Perth County, northern Grey County, and southern Bruce County.
The combination of snow and wind gusts reaching up to 50 kilometres an hour will make driving conditions tricky in some areas.
“The roads are snow covered, they are slick, they are slippery, and in some areas they are icy,” said OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk. “You are going to encounter some difficult driving conditions today, so if you can stay off the roads until this clears it might be the best thing for you.”
Drivers who must head out are advised to slow down and keep extra space between vehicles.
All school buses in Huron-Perth and Grey-Bruce are cancelled for today, while those in northern Wellington County continue to operate.
The snow squalls are expected to diminish overnight.
